Where are new manufactured homes being shipped to? The southern states are seeing more new home shipments than any other area of the country, and leading the nation is Texas, which received 11,020 new manufactured homes in 2008.
The total number of new manufactured homes shipped within the U.S. in 2008 was 81,907, down from 2007 when 96,752 new homes were sold, according to the U.S. Institute for Building Technology and Safety.
The following are the top 10 states that received the highest number of manufactured home shipments in 2008:
Texas 11, 020
Louisiana 7,707
Mississippi 4,402
Florida 4,292
North Carolina 4,105
Alabama 3,947
Kentucky 2,894
California 2,856
Oklahoma 2,833
Tennessee 2,569
For January 2009, which is the date the latest numbers are available, the total number of shipments was 3,818, significantly lower than the 6,827 new homes that were shipped in January 2008.
Although the housing market is depressed in general, manufactured housing may rebound more quickly due to a number of factors: the homes are generally less expensive than traditional site-built housing, manufacturers are making the homes more energy efficient and offering more attractive amenities including two-story homes, and retiring baby boomers looking for affordable yet attractive housing present opportunities for growth.
