Trading recipes is a time-honored tradition. Some recipes have been handed down from generation to generation and include “secret” ingredients that a person passes on through a will to the next generation of cooks. Other recipes are just a variation on something found in a well-used cookbook.
Protect yourself and the community by doing the following:
If your recipe is a variation of a recipe found in a cookbook, then cite the cookbook and explain your variation. Don’t imply the recipe is totally yours when someone can find it in a cookbook.
If you found a delicious recipe in a little known cookbook, even if published years ago, give credit to the author.
If you don’t know where the recipe came from, say so. For example, introduce your recipe with a story such as “a friend gave this to me years ago and the recipe has saved me from mealtime disasters on many occasion.”
Always remember to give credit where credit is due. |
